The overall design statement was a sharp break from the 50’s and expressed the energy and progressive ideology of the swinging 60’s thru the prism of Italian design. It is a very elegant design that epitomizes the best of the 1960’s Vespa style.  Stylewise the GL is considered an icon - it just looks great from any angle.Piaggio considered the GL as it’s mid-level model, a fashion forward scoot more technically advanced than earlier models, but no so expensive as the top of the line GS and SS sport models of the time.  The GL popularized a new type of midrange “touring” class of scooters between the “standard” VNB/VBB and the “sport” GS of the era. The GL offered advanced styling, reliable operation and lively performance.  With 10” wheels the ride and handling are top notch for the period.Mechanically, the GL was also a transition model featuring a robust and reliable motor based on the well sorted 150cc twin port design used previously with gearing suited to the new 10” wheels which improved handling and stability.  Brakes, suspension, electrical system and other details were very well sorted and the GL has no significant weak points or faults.  In production only four years 79,854 GLs were produced.  The GL is a perfect urban scooter with modest, but adequate, power for the city, decent brakes and nimble handling.  The GL incorporated proven technology for all major systems and are considered very dependable and trouble free.  Universally appreciated for the purity and grace of the styling, fun to ride, reliable, simple to work on and with very good parts availability, the GL is very popular with vintage Vespa enthusiasts and considered one of the most collectable models form the 1960’s period.>>>>>>>>>>>>
