MechanicalThis dune buggy, named Hot Wheel, is a custom build based on a 1974 VW Beetle. It has the 1600cc engine and the standard transaxle. The front end is mostly OEM, which gives it a nice light, bouncy buggy feel. The eight-gallon gas tank was custom made to match the brushed aluminum carb dust cover. The headers are third-party, and I do have an old flapper valve; I'll bolt it on there if you want (it looks nicer without it).
The cage is custom, and NHRA legal at 1 3/4" x 0.125". The tires are brand new; I just put 235x75r15 MTs on the rear wheels and 205x75r15 M+Ss on the front wheels for a slightly forward-slung dune buggy stance. The four-point harnesses have a seatbelt "push button" release for ease of use.ElectricalI'm including a Google Nexus 6p phone as a fancy speedometer. Check out the pictures to see it in action. It works on GPS as a speedo without a data plan, though you could have heads-up navigation if you popped a SIM card in there.
The wiring harness was custom built, and run in .125 wall thickness tube under the frame for robustness over rocks. The buggy has head lights, brake lights, and tail lights. I've included two extra switches and an extra forward wiring run to the dashboard in case you'd like to add accessories.
Legal
The buggy is only street legal in some states since it doesn't include fenders or a windshield. It has a clear title, which is becoming a rare thing for these vehicles as the years pass. Build Documentation
I documented the whole build in pictures and video. Check 'em out .
