72 Chevy Jr Kart. Based on a Rupp kart, these were promotional items authorised by Chevrolet and given away at venues such as state fairs and new car introductions. A few were sold to friends of dealers and several were used at Disneyland.
Having wanted one since 1965, I finally found this good solid example about 5 yrs ago. I obtained it from the original owner. It had been sitting for about 10 yrs prior to my purchase. Originally won at the Texas State Fair, the original owners father actually used it as a commuter to his job at the water plant of a small west Texas town for years in the 70s! Original tyres are worn smooth from usage...
The wheels are good and all there. The body is straight with no repairs or structural damage; there is a scrape down the side where the previous owner tried to repair. The PO also used pinstriping tape to put in 'headlight doors' and door shut lines and 'hood scoop' to make it look like a Corvette, even tho the design is modeled after the Monza GT show car. Frame is straight. Original engine was melted down by POs kids in the 80s. Brakes work and steering is fine. Original upholstery has pulled at a couple of seams - a talented upholstery shop could probably repair and maintain the original vinyl.
This is a good solid example to restore, or use as is if you prefer. I had every intention of doing a complete restoration , [repo decals are available] but about the time of purchase a fairly debilitating physical condition jumped on me. Still disabled, Ive about given up on getting better and feeling like messing with it, so I need to find it a good home where this interesting bit of Chevrolet history will be appreciated and hopefully brought back to its original splendor.
