Was it a ripper or a ride for those not looking to shred the trails? In our  we found the ACE was a blast and could tackle most anything we pointed it at. Even though it scooted through the woods much better than we expected for a 32-horsepower 830-pound rig, we silently hoped a larger displacement version was in the works. Less than a year later we found ourselves just outside of Zion National Park to test the 2015 Sportsman Polaris ACE 570.
The 2015 Polaris Sportsman ACE 570 is nearly identical to the smaller displacement ACE.
Virtually every piece of the Sportsman ACE and the Sportsman ACE 570 is identical. They share the same chassis with a MacPherson Strut front suspension and dual A-Arm rear suspension with 8.2 and 9.5 inches of travel respectively. Spring rates and damping settings are identical as well. They both have a 10.25 inches of ground clearance and a wheelbase of 61.5 inches. A towing capacity of 1500 pounds as well as a 300-pound cargo capacity remains unchanged. Polaris engineers informed the media that besides the addition of the 45-horsepower 570 ProStar powerplant and engine-specific engine brackets every part is interchangeable. MRSP is $1000 higher at $8499. The concept of the ACE is simple – combine the trail prowess of an ATV with the familiar controls and comfort of a UTV. It’s easy to see the Sportsman ATV line DNA in details like the front rack with storage underneath, the 25-inch tires and the MacPherson suspension. Other features such as the seat, roll cage and rear bed would look right at home on any RZR. It’s an excellent melding of an ATV and UTV that appeals to a number of users, from those that find ATVs too physical to others that want a small and easy-to-use UTV. Then there are riders like us that just find any new style of motorized recreation attractive. Firing up the ACE 570’s 567cc engine is easy as turning the ignition key that also controls the headlights. The engine springs to life quickly and settles in to a mellow idle without too much vibration. Grab the gear selection lever on the right side of the single seat and pull to the rear to select reverse, low or high gear. Engagement is not as smooth or definite as it could be. More than once we found the center-mounted gauge indicated a certain gear when the transmission was not engaged properly or completely. Not a major problem, rather an annoyance that occurred a handful of times.
In tighter trails the steering of the 2015 Polaris Sportsman ACE 570 is slightly heavy.
Once in a forward gear, the ACE 570 accelerates with a rush that will satisfy even more racy riders. The low-end is snappy and the mid-range builds solidly pushing you back into the seat. On top the power pulls the 570 to a top end right at what we would call “fast enough.” The fastest we saw out of the ACE 570 at the 5000-foot-plus trails was nearly 60 mph. Crawling along in low gear the ACE climbs nicely and never felt underpowered.
In low gear the 2015 Polaris ACE 570 climbs well.
To get a feel for the ACE 570, our test loop on Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort’s property combined a mix of tight two-track trails and fire roads. In the bumps and ruts the ACE felt like it may be a rough ride, but as speeds increased the suspension smoothed out. At fast trail speeds the ACE is controlled and soaks up bumps and ruts like a champ. Big whoops and jumps will have to wait until we get the ACE 570 out on our local Southern California trails. Although the ACE 570 is only 48 inches wide it is very stable on the trails. Not once did the ACE feel like it was in danger of tipping. When we tested the 32 horsepower ACE we felt there was some push to the front end, but with the extra power of the 570 ProStar the back comes around easier, negating understeer. On fast fire roads it’s easy to kick the rear end out and powerslide though turns.
With the extra grunt, power-sliding the 2015 Polaris ACE 570 easy.
Steering effort is slightly heavy at slow speeds and in tight trails and there is some feedback to the wheel when negotiating rocks, roots and ruts. Power steering is available from Polaris as an accessory, but it is pricy at $1299. We can live without it, especially when you consider the ACE 570’s price tag is very reasonable at $8499. The single seat is the same as the units that are found in the RZR 570. While comfortable, the more deeply bolstered units in the RZRZ S 900 and XP 1000 would provide a more secure ride. Head room is plentiful, and the adjustable seat position will fit most riders tall or small. The net system is easy to use but we would spring for the $499 sport doors. Polaris now gives those power-hungry ACE fans a machine that ups the performance factor while still being friendly to those that are looking for an easy to operate ATV or UTV. The 2015 Sportsman ACE 570 is a blast and we can’t wait to test it out on other environs such as the sand dunes and desert. Our other UTVs and ATVS will be sitting idle a bit more now that the ACE 570 is here.
